I will never forget traveling in Scotland, walking behind a mother and her child and hearing the mother tell the child, “Not every day can be extraordinary. Some days might just be ordinary.” Of course this was said in an amazing accent and sounded incredible to me but it really made me think about how I am raising my kids. We put so much pressure on ourselves to make every day extraordinary and its okay if we have an ordinary day. Life is made up of ups and downs and what am I teaching them if everything is always an up. Will they be able to handle disappointment? Also, what am I doing to myself in requiring that everything be great all the time? Well today was definitely a reminder to take a step back and make sure to take the downs and make the best of it. I am currently training for a half-marathon, which has been a long time goal, and while I was running I tripped and completely face planted. It was not pretty to say the least. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Then I figured, I can turn this lowlight and try to make it into a highlight. Not every day is going to be perfect and full of highlights like we try to portray to those around us and on social media. Some days will have bumps and bruises. However, there is a choice on how we react. We can stay down and feel defeated or choose to get back up and finish the run. So today, I got back up and kept going.
